LEGISLATION

ESG legislation is a fast developing and new area of the law, with many areas of ESG, particularly the "E" aspects of ESG, being developed in hard law and through soft law, through changing public demand and due to national emergencies. Find below key pieces of E related legislation. 

The Climate Change Act 2008 was the first global legally binding climate change mitigation target set by a country and sets the UK's emission reduction targets.

The Environment Act 2021 allows the UK Government to set binding targets on air quality, water, waste and biodiversity. 

The UK Stewardship Code 2020 sets standards for those investing money on behalf of UK savers and pensioners leading to sustainable benefits for the environment and society. 

The Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive requires certain companies to report on the impact of their corporate activities on the environment and society.

The EU's CSDDD will establish requirements for certain companies operating in the EU to undertake supply chain due diligence on a range of ESG issues

The UN SDGs are a global call to action to protect the planet and the most vulnerable members of society by 2030.
